During our drive from Las Vegas to southern Utah, we decided to pop off the freeway in the sprawling metropolis of Mesquite, NV to grab a late breakfast (or a late lunch for the east coasters). We were in the mood for a diner or similar, and Golden West looked about right from the Yelp photos. We couldn't help notice the sad state of the local neighborhood here, with many closed and boarded-up businesses. But the Golden West parking lot was nearly full; a good sign.
Upon entry we were hit with a wave of stale air, cigarette smoke, and the ring and flash of betting & game machines. At just past noon on a Wednesday, the main room was half-filled with mostly senior citizens clustered around a central bar area, working with machines and buttons on the bar top. (I have no idea what they were doing). Others were playing slots. Most had a cocktail. We were somewhat relieved when a hostess seated us around the corner, in a more private side room with a cracked window.
After that it went well. Our waitress was friendly. Coffee was standard diner-esque stuff: strong and freshly brewed. My huevos rancheros were unexpectedly good, with eggs cooked per my order (over-medium). Beans were also good; and the overall quality and portion left me satisfied. Others had burgers, sandwiches or omelets and emitted sounds of satisfaction. We had hit our "diner food" target squarely in the bullseye and were ready to head further down the highway.
I'm not sure how to rate the place. About 4 stars for the food, but the main room was a bit of a downer (and personally casinos make my skin crawl). It certainly had "character," but that word isn't always an asset. -

Very good breakfast priced well. Good selection. Coming back to try their Angus Burger!
Maria A. was our server and she was pleasant, upbeat and attentive! What a great personality. We'll be back to see Maria and enjoy her service and the great food! -

A little funky restaurant in old small casino. Breakfast is always good, hash browns always perfect.

The BEST thing about Mesquite Nevada is the food! If you want a Cowboys burger done right (and I mean RARE)Golden West has it along with a bar and games. This is definitely a must while visiting this city while off-roading!!! I wouldn't recommend this place for LDS tourists however, it's a bar first and foremost.
